Abstract

Stunting is a serious public health issue in South Sorong Regency, particularly in the working area of the Teminabuan Community Health Center. Exclusive breastfeeding and appropriate complementary feeding play an important role in preventing stunting in toddlers. The objective of this study was to determine the relationship between exclusive breastfeeding and appropriate complementary feeding with stunting incidence among infants aged 6–59 months in the Teminabuan Health Center’s service area. The study design was cross-sectional, with a sample of 80 infants selected using cluster sampling. Data were collected through interviews with the mothers of the infants and anthropometric measurements of the children's height according to WHO standards. Data analysis used the Chi-Square test to determine the relationship between the variables of exclusive breastfeeding and MP-ASI with the nutritional status of infants. The results showed that 62.5% of infants did not receive exclusive breastfeeding, and 62.5% received inappropriate complementary feeding (in terms of age, type, or frequency). The prevalence of stunting reached 61.2%. There was a significant association between exclusive breastfeeding (p=0.000) and appropriate complementary feeding (p=0.000) with stunting. Infants who did not receive exclusive breastfeeding and appropriate complementary feeding were more likely to experience stunting. In conclusion, exclusive breastfeeding and appropriate complementary feeding are highly influential in reducing stunting. It is recommended that nutrition education and mother-child support interventions be implemented to optimize exclusive breastfeeding and complementary feeding practices to prevent stunting.
